acquired from galerie Schlichtenmaier 1989 by a private german collector.
This very fine carving has many of the characteristics of Tilman riemenschneider with its use of natural limewood and details such as the pupils of the eyes and mouths emphasized with colour. The devout expression of the youthful Virgin contrasts with the worldly wisdom of god the Father and Son whose protective gestures enhance her empathy with the devout.
