Venice, circa 1300. Historiated initial from a manuscript on vellum.
Cecilia took a vow of abstinence and on marrying the roman nobleman Valerius she persuaded him to do the same. He agreed on condition that he be allowed to see the angel that he knew watched over his wife. This minature depicts the angel descending and crowning them both with garlands of roses and lilies as they sit together by their bridal bed. Valerius was then baptized a christian but in due course they were both executed by the roman governor.
